It was a pleasure to be on the inaugural tennis panel at the ESPN Sloan Sports Conference at MIT in Boston this weekend.

The panel was moderated by ESPN’s Mark Stein and I was joined by Paul Annacone (Roger Federer’s coach) and Todd Martin (former top #5) for the discussion. The conference has been going for 6 years and this was the first year tennis was included.
It was great to get together with Paul and Todd before the panel and talk about tennis analytics and discuss just little they are actually applied in our sport. In fact, Mark Stein opened the discussion by stating that tennis is the second worst sport to adopt analytics in their sport – with boxing being the worst.
During the panel discussion, we we talked about the numbers that matter in our sport, how the USTA could be doing much better if they adopted it more, and the challenges of implementing it correctly with pro players.
The video of the conference will be online in the near future – I will let you all know when that’s available.
Best,
Craig
